The origin of the terms Islamophobia and Islamophilia sheds light on the significance of IslamiCity’s transformative mission.

Islamophobia is derived from the Greek word ‘Phobos,’ meaning fear, and the Arabic ‘Islam,’ which means peace.

The term first appeared in 1925 when two French writers, Etienne Dinet and Slima Ben Ibrahim, used it in their book ‘‘Accès de Délire Islamophobe’ (Access to Islamophobic Delirium).

However, it wasn’t until the release of a report titled ‘Islamophobia: A Challenge for Us All’ by the Runnymede Trust in the UK in 1997 that the term gained widespread recognition and usage. This report delved into the historical context of Muslims in the UK, shedding light on the factors contributing to the surge in prejudice against Muslims within the media.

Linguistically, Islamophobia can be seen as an oxymoron, signifying the “fear of peace.” In everyday usage, the term encapsulates irrational fear, prejudice, and discrimination against Islam and Muslims.

IslamiCity, since its establishment in February 1995, has been on a mission to cultivate “Islamophilia.” Philia, also from Greek, translates as friendship or affection and stands in opposition to “phobia.”

For those who understand the message of the Quran and the example of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the task is to foster a positive regard, appreciation, and love for Islam. IslamiCity’s goal is not just to alleviate Islamophobia but to instill a genuine appreciation and understanding of Islam in Muslims, enabling them to exemplify the best aspects of their faith.

At its core, IslamiCity transcends the confines of a typical website, emerging as a dynamic force committed to empowering both Muslims and non-Muslims with accurate knowledge about Islam.

The mission of IslamiCity is rooted in providing a non-sectarian, comprehensive, and holistic view of Islam and Muslims. In an era where prejudiced representations abound, this platform offers a nuanced understanding of the diverse tapestry of beliefs and practices within the Islamic world.

IslamiCity adopts a knowledge-centric approach, recognizing that accurate information is a potent tool against ignorance. With a commitment to cultivating peace, inspiring action, and encouraging purposeful living through the universal teachings of Islam, it stands as a counterforce to the divisive narratives that fuel Islamophobia.

IslamiCity aims to elevate Muslims and equip them with the knowledge needed to advocate for Islam. By dispelling myths and clarifying misconceptions, IslamiCity serves as an imperative resource in the battle against the ignorance that fuels Islamophobia.

In the realm of technology, IslamiCity stands as a pioneer. It has developed unique applications that facilitate easy and in-depth access to core Islamic texts, including the Quran and Hadith. Leveraging emerging technologies such as publishing the Quran on the blockchain and creating an AI knowledge base, IslamiCity ensures that the wisdom of these foundational texts is globally accessible.

IslamiCity’s impact extends globally, attracting millions of visitors each year from over 225 countries and territories. Serving as a virtual meeting ground, it fosters dialogue, cooperation, and the exchange of ideas among individuals of diverse backgrounds.

Crucially, IslamiCity champions universal values, cooperation, and dialogue among civilizations. It strives for the nobility of consciousness, truthfulness of expression, and goodness of action, rooted in the belief that peace blossoms through love and justice.

In the face of Islamophobia, “Let’s change Islamophobia into ISLAMOPHILIA!”
